New EP Released: Morning Ritual (free single download)

A brand new EP by the Solid Rock Blues Band has been released today on ReverbNation, BandCamp and SoundCloud.

We’re moving! Moving to a new house and this also means: a new studio! To mark this big change here’s the last production ever made in the old “Loft Studio” – our brand new EP “Morning Ritual”. The album includes four blues, country and rock inspired original songs.

The Title Track, “Morning Ritual” can be downloaded for free at SoundCloud. But if you’re willing to support independent music, please consider downloading the full album (EP) from BandCamp for only $2!

The album is available exclusively as a download, for now, trough BandCamp.

TRACKS
All songs are recorded at the LoftStudio. The song “Summertime” has been mixed and produced by Jay H., writer of the VocalKing plugin (click here to check his website).

01 – Wine
A song telling the story of a lady, addicted to Wine.. up-beat, guitar driven, track!

02 – Morning Ritual
The Title Track. Well, .. a song about drinking coffee and the End of the World. But it seems as long there’s coffee, we do not need to worry about the End of the World, right?

03 – Stone Hearted Mandy
Previously recorded and released on the Barking Aunts’ album “Yesterday’s Coffee“. This was a concept album, a story in a handful of songs, about family life and how it got torn apart. We thought this track could be improved so we re-recorded it.

04 – Summertime
We can’t wait for Summer to begin.. mixed and produced by Jay H. using his Vocal King plugin and giving it a good creative treatment. It brought the song to a level we would have never expected.

CREDITS
Special thanks to my friends who helped me out on this one!

  • James Zheutlin (a.k.a. Acid Cowboys) – Text contributions;
  • Jay H – mix & production on “Summertime”

Spotify for Artists 2018

Spotify has just released the statistics over 2018 and as an artist you can see how many streams your songs got, how much time people spend on listening to your songs and some more.

For us, it was a nice surprise to see how many streams the songs got. I’ve always been curious about this and now, finally, I can get some insights from Spotify directly instead of the statistics from CDBaby, Tunecore and the like.

Much to my surprise, it seems people listened to the “Down for the Count” album a lot: 815 streams and 2k minutes (yes, that’s well over 33 hours!). Despite this, no sales from or related to Spotify. And if you’re in it for the money, don’t trush to be able to make a living out of it unless your name is Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan. But even they won’t get much payments from Spotify.

As long as you’ve had more than three listeners before October 31st, there’s a wrapped experience waiting for you. Spotify

For sales, we depend on CDBaby and BandCamp. If interested in high audio qualiy downloads of our music, please check them out:

Full Back Catalog Now Available as a FREE Download!

bandcamp albums available for free download
As of today, the full back catalog of the former “Barking Aunts Project” and the “Solid Rock Blues Band” are now available for FREE at the BandCamp website.

Except for our most recent Single, No Limit (On Love) all albums, EP’s and other materials are now available as a “whatever you can afford” FREE download.

The albums can be downloaded here: https://barkingaunts.bandcamp.com/

The only thing we ask in return is your email address, so we can send you updates about the projects and albums. Don’t want to receive email updates? Donate a small fee and we won’t bother you!

WHY DID WE DO THIS?!

You might wonder why we are now offering all music as free downloads. The reason for this is simple: over the years we’ve spend a lot of time and effort in recording music. Publishing it. On Spotify, for example, this resulted in well over 33,000 plays/streams. We got paid US$ 1.35 for those 33,000 streams. That’s what we consider a total and complete insult. So, since they’re giving it away – why don’t we? And get something in return: a way to get in touch with the people listening to our songs.

We will continue to make singles, albums and EP’s and make them available on commercial platforms (since they will put them on Spotify, iTunes and so on). But on our BandCamp page you can get them for free. Except for the most recent publication. So, the back catalog, as of now, will be free. Forever. As soon as we publish something new, it will be for sale and the previous single, album or EP will be set to “free download” and so on.

Day By Day – Free Gospel Album (EP)

“Day By Day” contains six strong, classic, spiritual songs (hymns) in a more modern setting: instead of organs and choirs, you will hear a band using Drums, Bass, Guitars and Harp. The title track, Day By Day, was written in 1865. Most of the tracks, except for one original song, date back at least 100 years and have been popular for many decades in congregations all over the world.

Over the years I’ve recorded several gospel songs (traditionals). Of course, not as you might know them from Church. Some are a little more up-tempo. Instrumentation has been modernized. Drums, Bass, Guitar, Harp. All recorded at the “ZolderStudio” home recording studio.

At this moment the EP (only available, for now, on BandCamp, AudioMack and Soundcloud) contains six tracks, including one original song. All tracks can be downloaded for free. The album might include more tracks later on but for now, this is the “as is”, first, free, pre-release version.

Tracks inlcuded are traditional hymns like “Day By Day”, “What A Friend We Have in Jesus” and “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”. All songs dating back, originally, well over a hundred years yet with lyrics that still are powerful, comforting and with deep spiritual meaning.

We’re planning to add some more tracks later on and after that make it available as a “commercial” realease at CDBaby and BandCamp. We hope you enjoy this free (EP) Album. Feel free to share!

Album Review “Down for the Count” on Drooble

Drooble, the social music website, reviewed the album “Down for the Count” today on their blog. Here’s the full text. Almost needless to say we’re very happy with this review (we, yes. Since even though it’s a solo project there are co-writers involved).

A guitar player and singer from the Netherlands, Rudy Brinkman has all the chops and lyrical talent to tell a compelling story. Down For The Count, his full-length record, has no less than eight of these — and most of them have something to do with a woman. He Stopped Loving Her Today is the broken-hearted man’s musical manifesto, and the bluesy/country goods don’t stop here.

The record is solid through and through, with Rudy’s voice taking just a little bit of time to settle in before you are up singing along to his soulful tunes. If the music gets your voice singing and your feet stomping, there must be something to it, right?

Otherwise, there’s not a whole lot going on in this album. Rudy likes to keep things simple and barebones, which really works for the moods and feelings he wants to express. Down For The Count is as far from overproduced as it can possibly get without sounding trashy.

We are always grateful for artists like Rudy who don’t mind sharing themselves unabashedly while showcasing some perfectly good songwriting along the way. We hope you have gotten over her for good, Mr. Brinkman!

The album is available for streaming on Drooble as well as on iTunes, BandCamp, SoundCloud and many other places. It includes original songs and some covers. Most of the songs are blues or country inspired. Covers included songs by Larry Norman, Rex Griffin, Bobby Braddock & Curly Putman and Bob Dylan. Also included is the well known song “House of the Rising Sun”, a traditional song made famous by The Animals (and many others).

All instruments and vocals on the album are by Rudy. The album was recorded at the Loft Studio (Zolderstudio). It features a Gretsch Electromatic guitar on many tracks, as well as a vintage Hondo guitar. All recordings were recorded and mixed using Ardour running on a Linux based system (KXStudio).

How to get plays on BandCamp (for free)

Bandcamp is a wonderful platform to get your music heard and distributed for a very decent, small, fee. They take 10% of your sales – no upfront payment, no membership. It’s the best deal you can get if you ask me. But how to get noticed on BandCamp?

I’ve had some serious issue with that, to be honest. I put albums on BandCamp, ”advertised” them on my websites, twitter, facebook, google+. And the albums got some plays and even some sales. On ReverbNation it’s easy to get some attention. Simply hand them a few dollars and you can buy advertising. On BandCamp you cannot get paid advertising. I think they could improve their site slightly – adding a charts section, allowing people to buy advertising. On the other side, .. if you do so, only those with some serious budget will get serious attention.

HOW TO GET FREE PLAYS ON BANDCAMP

So, how do you get noticed at BandCamp? How do you “advertise” your album or single? It turns out it’s pretty easy. It all revolves around the “discover” settings!

  • Go to the BandCamp website, log in to your account, and click on the “profile” settings;
  • Select the genre your music fits in;
  • Select the sub-genres it fits in.

See below screen captures.

Selecting the genre

The sub-genres should be the ones connected to the main genre! You can find them by looking at the ‘discover’ section at BandCamp. Below I’ve selected “folk” and on the second row you see the sub-genres you can choose from.

Now wait for a day and you’ll see your new album listed under the new arrivals. And you’ll get (free) plays!

Down for the Count showing up at New Arrivals

HOW MANY PLAYS?

How many plays will this get you? It all depends on how popular the genre is. The more new releases the faster you’ll go down in listing. But, a popular genre will also give you more plays. But in the end it’s free promotion. It got the new album we’ve released about 100+ (extra) plays of songs in only a few days.
