Lottery Tickets, aren’t they cool?

Lottery Ticket, You’re so cool – You keep me dreaming, One Day Soon – I’m nobody’s fool!

Isn’t that what we all dream about? To say to the boss “I’m out of here”? To tell the landlord we’re moving out because we’ve bought a house ten times bigger than he has? And drive over to the new house in a brand new car?

Last week I heard an interview on the radio about the lottery – it inspired me to write this upbeat “Rock and Roll”  song. Just imagine what you could do only if.. – that’s a big IF of course. So many people hope for this big break. And some keep on hoping, all of their life. Gambling, big or small, is a big issue in society these days. Well, in fact it has been for centuries. Many songs were written about it. Here’s my take on this.

Recorded at the ZolderStudio (LoftStudio) home recording studio.

The End Of The Street (free single)

Today we’re releasing another (free) brand new track! The End Of The Street, a sad, bluesy, song about a love affair that went wrong. You can listen for free (streaming) at Drooble or BandCamp. The free download is available at BandCamp.

Download from Bandcamp:
https://barkingaunts.bandcamp.com/track/the-end-of-the-street

The track was recorded at our home recording studio, the ZolderStudio (LoftStudio). It’s the first new release recorded at the new studio!

It took about a year to finish this song. After writing the initial first verse and chorus and recording it on a smartphone we’ve been working on it off and on. The first acoustic versions were recorded but we didn’t like them. Rewrote part of the lyrics and rerecorded it in a ‘full band setting’.

Recording details:
Drums, Bass – Digitech Trio
Guitars, Vocals, Keyboard – Rudy
DAW: Ardour

There are only 200 free downloads/month available at BandCamp. If you’d like to, however, you can support us by paying a small fee! We’d really appreciate that!

Folsom Prison Blues – Home Studio Sessions

Acoustic version of Folsom Prison Blues Recorded live at the LoftStudio Home Recording Studio. Just a simple quick take, hope you like it!

I learned to love this song on a young age, since my father was a big fan of Johnny Cash (and lot’s of other country music). I’m not a big fan of modern country but like to listen and play songs by Johnny Cash and other “outlaw country” artists even though Blues and Rock are my favorite music styles.

Equipment used:
– guitar: Samick Greg Bennett
– mic: MXL770
– Interface: Behringer UMC404HD
– Ardour (Linux DAW)
– camera: Medion Life

When Money Talks (Free Single)

The recent earthquake in Groningen, last Wednesday, with a 3.4 Magnitude inspired me to write this song the same day it happened.

Free Download at:
https://soundcloud.com/barkingaunts/when-money-talks

The song was recorded last Sunday at the Home Recording Studio “De Zolderstudio” in less than two hours. It was written out of anger, frustration. We live close to the area where the earthquakes are. Some smaller ones have been in our are – damaging houses, schools, infrastructure. We’ve been waiting for the politicians to start making changes. To stop the gas extraction that ruined thousands of houses. They will not listen. Since it seems Money Talks a lot louder ..

WHEN MONEY TALKS
All rights (c)2019 Solid Rock Blues Band

My back was aching
and my hands were shaking
I got up
Outside it’s raining
and the kids complaining
oh shut up

Promised me the moon
you’ll be a rich man soon

When the money comes in
They will be your friend
ain’t it cool
If it’s money that talks
They’ll act like hawks
I’m no fool

Such a fool am I
Never wondered why
they’re coming down
from capital city
The news they got
it ain’t so pretty
pumpin’ (the) gas
out of the ground
say it makes
the world go around

The earth starts movin’
Oh What are they doin’
To my land?
Heard the loudest thwack
And the walls they crack
empty hand..

New EP Released: Morning Ritual (free single download)

A brand new EP by the Solid Rock Blues Band has been released today on ReverbNation, BandCamp and SoundCloud.

We’re moving! Moving to a new house and this also means: a new studio! To mark this big change here’s the last production ever made in the old “Loft Studio” – our brand new EP “Morning Ritual”. The album includes four blues, country and rock inspired original songs.

The Title Track, “Morning Ritual” can be downloaded for free at SoundCloud. But if you’re willing to support independent music, please consider downloading the full album (EP) from BandCamp for only $2!

The album is available exclusively as a download, for now, trough BandCamp.

TRACKS
All songs are recorded at the LoftStudio. The song “Summertime” has been mixed and produced by Jay H., writer of the VocalKing plugin (click here to check his website).

01 – Wine
A song telling the story of a lady, addicted to Wine.. up-beat, guitar driven, track!

02 – Morning Ritual
The Title Track. Well, .. a song about drinking coffee and the End of the World. But it seems as long there’s coffee, we do not need to worry about the End of the World, right?

03 – Stone Hearted Mandy
Previously recorded and released on the Barking Aunts’ album “Yesterday’s Coffee“. This was a concept album, a story in a handful of songs, about family life and how it got torn apart. We thought this track could be improved so we re-recorded it.

04 – Summertime
We can’t wait for Summer to begin.. mixed and produced by Jay H. using his Vocal King plugin and giving it a good creative treatment. It brought the song to a level we would have never expected.

CREDITS
Special thanks to my friends who helped me out on this one!

  • James Zheutlin (a.k.a. Acid Cowboys) – Text contributions;

MORNING RITUAL (Lyrics)

Words & Music (c)2019, Solid Rock Blues Band

Well here’s your coffee dear,
it’s in a paper cup,
I know you do adhere
to the morning ritual..
without you can’t get up,
so here’s your coffee dear
here’s your coffee dear

Well here’s your paper dear,
it says the end is near,
you might not want to read,
or hear the news today
don’t worry anyhow
here’s your coffee dear,
here’s your coffee dear

Chorus:
You can Leave Your Make-up on the shelf,
‘cus time, time suits you well,
and here’s your coffee dear

Here’s Your Coffee Dear,
though the End is Near,
You know we can’t give up
on our morning ritual,
yeah though our life is short,
at least there’s coffee dear,
so here’s your coffee dear.

Harley Benton MM88A SB DeLuxe Bass Guitar (Demo)

On may 2017 I did my first review of the Harley Benton MM88A SB DeLuxe and I’ve had it for almost two years now. I still am not a great bass player but I’d like to give a little update on it. I was rehearsing some parts for a new song and thought “why not record this and put it online”. So here it is!

I never posted the first review on this website since it was on the previous “Barking Aunts” website. Click on this link to watch it. As you can see I did improve my bass playing a little 🙂

The Bass-guitar has been used on several studio recordings so far and I’m still very pleased with it! It’s a great, budget friendly, bass guitar and has, apart from the great looks, a nice tone.

It is played here over a ‘party amp’ in this video and I used a backing track for drums created with FXxpansion ECO Drums – a Windows program that also works well on Wine, under Linux, too. I’m really happy it does, since it’s a great drums-program and it was one of the programs I really missed when switching to Linux.

The audio was recorded using my Sony Cybershot camera – so this setup lacks a lot of low end, but you’ll get the picture I guess.

Spotify for Artists 2018

Spotify has just released the statistics over 2018 and as an artist you can see how many streams your songs got, how much time people spend on listening to your songs and some more.

For us, it was a nice surprise to see how many streams the songs got. I’ve always been curious about this and now, finally, I can get some insights from Spotify directly instead of the statistics from CDBaby, Tunecore and the like.

Much to my surprise, it seems people listened to the “Down for the Count” album a lot: 815 streams and 2k minutes (yes, that’s well over 33 hours!). Despite this, no sales from or related to Spotify. And if you’re in it for the money, don’t trush to be able to make a living out of it unless your name is Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan. But even they won’t get much payments from Spotify.

As long as you’ve had more than three listeners before October 31st, there’s a wrapped experience waiting for you. Spotify

For sales, we depend on CDBaby and BandCamp. If interested in high audio qualiy downloads of our music, please check them out:

Summertime – Free Download!

What happens if you let someone who’s got great mixing skills as well is the writer of a good vocal plugin mix your track “just for the fun of it”? Recently we were recording a new song and our friend Jay H. from JHudStudio created an alternative mix. We liked it so much that we have decided to publish this mix instead of our own!

Jay H. is the author of the Vocal King plugin, and some other (free) plugins for Windows DAW’s. He put some good time and effort in our song and (re)mixed and produced it based on the original, unedited, stem-exports from our Ardour DAW. This resulted in an original, creative, mix of our song and we were so very pleased with it!

The song is now available as a free download at SoundCloud. We hope you like it. Feel free to share!

The mood of the song, as well as the style, is probably a “60’s” or “70’s” feel, in the vain of Bob Dylan, The Byrds and so on. Drums were created using Ditigtech TRIO, Bass, guitars and vocals by Rudy. Recorded using Ardour (Linux). Mixed & produced by Jay H. from JayHudStudio.
